Firehouse Subs, the Florida-based chain of sandwich shops started by firefighters, opened its first Tucson area location on Monday in a 2,150-square-foot building at the Marana Marketplace, 3844 W. River Road at Thornydale Road.

The shop opened Monday. Hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays and until 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

Firehouse Subs, which specializes in steamed subs,was founded in 1994 in Florida by firefighter Chris Sorensen and his brother Robin. The company has more than 370 locaitons nationwide including several in the Phoenix area.

In keeping with its firehouse theme, the Marana restaurant features a custom, hand-painted mural depicting a scene from the fire that engulfed the Western Firehouse of Old Tucson Studios.
