Barrio Cuisine, which brought native Pascua Yaqui and Tohono O’Odham flavors to downtown Tucson, has closed after a year in business.

A sign posted on the door dated Oct. 1 states that the building’s locks had been changed due to unpaid rent. The statement also holds the tenants accountable for rent payments until the end of the lease term. The landlord, The Lewis Hotel LLC, also placed a lien claiming personal property inside the building.

Barrio opened in the historic Julian Drew block at 188 E. Broadway in October of last year, bringing a gourmet touch to dishes like fry bread and nopalito salad. Co-owner Kelly Gomez, whose children are both registered members of the Pascua Yaqui Reservation, crafted the menu from family recipes.

As of Friday evening, calls to the restaurant went unanswered with no message machine and Gomez was unable to reach for comment.
