Gio Taco, the late-night Mexican fusion restaurant opened by restaurateur Brian Metzger in 2013, has announced it's closing down immediately.
A post on the shop's Facebook page states they lacked the support needed to maintain a restaurant downtown on Congress Street. The restaurant is located on a busy corner underneath The Cadence apartment building at 350 E. Congress St.
The post says that Gio Taco's employees will have the opportunity to be relocated at Metzger's two other restaurants, Poppy Kitchen and Jackson Tavern.
Here is the post in its entirety:
"It's with great regret that Metzger Family Restaurants has decided to close Gio Taco.
We had hoped to remain in business until month's end, and thought we had reached this agreement with our landlord, but, unfortunately, the closing is effective immediately.
We've shared this news with our staff members and have assured them that they will each be given the opportunity to continue their service at other MFR restaurants. Similarly, all Gio Taco gift certificates will continue to be honored at our other restaurants.
We aren't too proud to admit that some concepts simply don't work. When we opened Gio Taco 15 months ago, it was with a sense of excitement for what this fun and fresh concept would bring to downtown. But our take on tacos, inspired by the dynamic culinary traditions of the Americas, didn't earn the level of support that it needed for the restaurant to survive on the corner of Congress and Fourth.
As dispiriting as this is, our commitment to the Gio Taco concept is stronger than ever, and we'll continue to explore other opportunities for the brand.
We wish the very best to our local restaurant colleagues, both downtown and beyond, and we'll continue to work with them collectively and collaboratively to serve this great community."
