St. Andrew’s Bach Society looked in its own backyard for the second installment of its popular summer concert series.
On Sunday, July 16, the society is hosting a homegrown family ensemble in a recital that includes a piece written by a Tucson composer.
Woodsmusick Ensemble — made up of the Woods family (dad Rex on piano, son Garrick on cello, son Alexander on violin and viola and daughter Aubrey on violin, with a little help from Christian Smith on bassoon) — will perform longtime University of Arizona professor/composer Richard Faith’s Quintet for Violin, Viola, Violoncello, Bassoon and Piano. The program also includes series’ namesake Bach’s Trio Sonata for Two Violins and Continuo in G major; and Mozart’s Piano Quartet in G minor.
Faith taught at the UA for 27 years before retiring in 1988. His most popular works were inspired by his Arizona tenure, from his songs and choral works to his piano concertos, orchestral and chamber works and opera.
In fact, it was a chance to premiere Faith’s Divertimento in 2012 that brought the Woodsmusick ensemble together. The Woods family, anchored by patriarch and UA music prof Rex, has performed since the kids were tykes, but this was the first time they formed in a professional capacity.
In 2013, Woodsmusick recorded Divertimento and other works by Faith on “Richard Faith: Neo-Romantic Music for Mixed Chamber Ensemble.”
Sunday’s concert begins at 2 p.m. at Grace St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 2331 E. Adams St. Tickets are $12 for adults, $6 for students in advance at standrewsbach.org or at the door. Details: Call 808-2122.
