Arizona Symphonic Winds’ Veterans Day Concert has been a Tucson tradition for 34 years as the volunteer ensemble pays tribute to those who have fought and died for our freedoms.

On Veterans Day 2019 — Monday, Nov. 11 — longtime Winds Music Director László Veres, an Army veteran, will don his ubiquitous Sousa style uniform to lead the group in a free concert of flag-waving, heart-tugging anthems and marches.

The program will include the usual Veterans Day fare — “Star Spangled Banner,” “Stars and Stripes Forever,” “America the Beautiful” — alongside a pair of works by Tucson-based composer Mark Wolfram, who has written a number of pieces for the Winds and Veres’s other ensemble, Tucson Pops Orchestra since retiring to Tucson several years ago; and the “Armed Forces Salute” to America’s military might.

Veres also adds to the mix a little light opera (the Overture to Strauss’s “Die Fledermaus”) and Hollywood (John Williams music from the big screen biopic “Lincoln”), as well as the romantic Concertino for Trombone with guest soloist Tucson Symphony Orchestra trombonist Joey Muñoz.

The focus of the Veterans Day concerts in past years and on Monday has been and will be the military. Trumpet brothers Kenny and Danny Saufley will duet on the haunting melody of “Il Silenzio,” the Italian calvary bugle call. The program also includes the famous Civil War march “When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again” and “Where Never Lark or Eagle Flew,” set to the poem by J.G. Magee Jr. about a young pilot’s wartime mission.

Arizona Symphonic Winds will perform “A Musical Tribute to Our Veterans, Past and Present” at 2 p.m. Monday at Catalina Foothills High School auditorium, 4300 E. Sunrise Drive. Admission is free and donations are accepted. Details: facebook.com/ArizonaSymphonicWinds
