LOS ANGELES β Thereβs a 20-month gap between the second season of βDaveβ and the third. But, thatβs OK, according to star Dave Burd.
βThe more time you have to think about anything in life, the more you are going to be thoughtful and have good thoughts,β the rapper says. βIt allowed me to have perspective.β
It's on the road time for the cast of "Dave," from left: Travis 'Taco' Bennett as Elz, Andrew Santino as Mike, Dave Burd as Dave, GaTa as "GaT…
In the series, Burd plays a heightened version of himself β a rapper who went from a job in advertising to a YouTube sensation. The life that followed included personal highs and lows and, as viewers saw in the second season, a separation from his friends.
Now, in the third season, the gang is back and theyβre living on a tour bus. βWeβre all in this thing together,β Burd says. βIn season 2, there was a lot of interpersonal strife and conflict β which makes great dramatic television. But this season, itβs us against the world.β
The tour β which takes Burdβs Little Dicky from Texas to Mississippi to Nevada, Pennsylvania and Georgia β helps show how culturally diverse the country is. βEvery episode kind of becomes its own short film with its own intention,β Burd says. βItβs really exciting as a filmmaker to be able to have a fresh start and a fresh approach every episode based on where you are.β
Executive Producer Vanessa McGee says the tour bus βencapsulates the scrappinessβ of the journey.
βI wanted to show what itβs really like, not a glamorized version,β Burd says.
βTours are really gritty, man,β says GaTa, who plays Burdβs friend and fellow artist. βItβs definitely an everyday grind. You get to see us struggling on the bus, trying to keep it clean.β
Dave Burd and Taylor Misiak talk relationships in "Dave."Β
Christine Ko, who plays Emma, says the βDaveβ bus became a nightmare. βThere was Coke spilled everywhere. It was sticky in every place possible. So, I loved it.β
Touring, GaTa says, teaches plenty of lessons. βIt really puts you in different perspectives and you get to see how people live in different places. Itβs a very educating experience.β
To give audiences a sense of the world, βDaveβ will feature guest appearances from Demi Lovato, Machine Gun Kelly, Megan Fox, Travis Barker and others. βThe other fraction that I havenβt named will blow you away,β Burd says. βIt felt like, βLifelong dreams have come true.ββ
Taffy Brodesser-Akner, showrunner, executive producer, and writer, talks to the Sioux City Journalβs Bruce Miller about her new FX show "Fleishman Is In Trouble" coming to Hulu on Nov. 17th.
While most are playing themselves, some like offering βfunhouseβ versions of themselves, Executive Producer Jeff Schaffer says. βThey like being able to play with their public perceptions. People want to come and have fun.β Lin-Manuel Miranda, βwhoβs one of the nicest people on the planet,β gets to play a passive-aggressive jerk.
Burd, meanwhile, gets to hew pretty closely to reality.
βItβs very freeing,β he explains. βI literally had surgery on my penis as a kid and I lived my whole life fearful of that. It was constantly top of mind whenever I entered any romantic experience and itβs stressful. To be able to convey that through a funny medium is something I really take pride in. Thereβs nothing more valuable in storytelling than truth. Iβve been fortunate enough to have everybody (in the cast) help me tell my truth.β
REVIEW: 'Dave,' season 2 starts strong with K-pop conundrum
Because heβs so involved in so many aspects of βDave,β Burd says it takes time to produce. In addition to writing the music, running the show, performing and editing, heβs trying to get a new album out.
βWe shoot our show within four months, which is really fast for a TV show,β Ko says, but Burd is working on all those behind-the-scenes aspects while his co-stars are away working on other projects. βItβs kind of like heβs doing five full-time jobs.β
That album? βItβs been eight years since weβve had an album,β Burd says. βIβm not giving up on that. Itβs a balancing act because I really care. I have a lot prove as a musician and artist and I look forward to doing that in tandem with my film career.β
βDaveβ returns April 5th on FXX and streams the next day on Hulu.
