Past and present photos of Tucson's giraffe population. Denver, 28, Elinor, 17, and Jasiri, 5, are reticulated giraffe. Denver is the zoo elder, having been there since 1989. Jasiri has been there for four years.Β

17 year-old female giraffe "Denver" uses her two foot long purple tongue to reach for some greens (called kale) at the giraffe feeding station that opened at Reid Park Zoo on April 1, 2006. At the giraffe station, the animals are also fed carrots and "primate biscuits" which are large pellet-like containing oats, fibers, and grains, and zoo keepers don't like the giraffes to have more than 400 of the biscuits per day. Shawn Giblin feeds 17 year-old female giraffe "Denver" as his daughter Natasha Giblin, 3, helps out at the giraffe feeding station that opened at Reid Park Zoo on April 1, 2006. The $58,600 structure was paid for by private donors and the Feder Family and is open daily at 10am usually for an hour. The times vary on the weekend, so check ask at the front gate. For $2 per person, greens, carrots, and two "primate biscuits" are handed out to be fed by the giraffes, who have no problem using their two-foot long purple tongue to take the items from you. Zookeeper, Karen Toca, fed Denver mesquite beans this morning. It was the first time Denver has participated in the daily Giraffe Encounter events since she was fed poisonous plants July 18.
