San Xavier volunteer and historian Bernard "Bunny" Fontana examines the graffiti etched in choir loft of the mission in November 1995. Removing the graffiti as part of the restoration project came into question because some of the signatures on the wall date to the mid-and late 1800s and as early as a decade before. Some of the names have historical significance while the others have blended into the pages of history. Gary Gaynor / Tucson Citizen

The scanning took place at University Medical Center. The group wants to determine if the 18th century statue is really a statue within a statue. Bruce McClelland / Arizona Daily Star
