Senior pass rusher DeAndre’ Miller has “a stress thing” in his foot and had surgery last week, Rodriguez said. Miller was originally supposed to attend Media Days but had to stay home.

“Hopefully he’ll be back for the first game,” Rodriguez said.

Miller’s absence from training camp will open opportunities for other players to seize time at the hybrid “Stud” position.

Defensive tackle Sione Taufahema also isn’t 100 percent, according to Rodriguez.

“He had a little injury issue, he gained a little bit of weight, so he’s got to drop some weight and get in shape before he can contribute,” Rodriguez said. “But if he gets in shape in the next month, he can help us.”

Taufahema, a 300-plus-pound JC transfer who enrolled in January, was expected to be part of the rotation this season.
