When former Arizona assistant coachΒ Joe PasternackΒ became the head coach at UC Santa Barbara last week, he joined a long list of 11 other ex-UA assistants who left Tucson for their own gigs. Itβs not foolproof. Five of those who took Division I head coaching jobs didnβt survive the first assignment.Β Jay JohnΒ was fired at Oregon State;Β Phil JohnsonΒ at San Jose State;Β Rodney TentionΒ at Loyola Marymount; andΒ Ken BurmeisterΒ at UTSA. Four more didnβt remain head coaches over the long haul:Β Ricky ByrdsongΒ was fired at Northwestern;Β Jessie EvansΒ was fired at USF;Β Scott ThompsonΒ at Wichita State; andΒ Kevin OβNeillΒ job-hopped for 20 years. Only IndianaβsΒ Archie MillerΒ and Ball StateβsΒ James WhitfordΒ remain Division I head coaches; Burmeister is the head coach at University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio.Β
