A wrong-way driver who police say appeared to be impaired was arrested yesterday after fatally hitting a bicyclist on Tucson’s “A” Mountain Thursday morning, authorities say.
Officers responded to Sentinel Peak Road for reports of a cyclist struck by a car at 9:30 a.m., said Sgt. Pete Dugan, a Tucson police spokesman.
The bicyclist, a 73-year-old man, was found unresponsive with life-threatening injuries near the top of the mountain.
He was later pronounced dead at Banner-University Medical Center. His name has not been released.
Police said 20-year-old Yanibra Moreno, who appeared to be impaired by alcohol use, was driving the wrong way when the collision occurred.
Dugan said she also knocked down a man and woman before crashing her car into a large landscaping boulders at in the Sentinel Peak parking lot. The pair were treated for minor injuries.
Community members stopped Moreno from leaving the area, Dugan said.
Moreno was taken to the hospital for minor injuries and has been booked into the Pima County jail. She faces felony charges for hit-and-run, two counts of aggravated assault, and second degree murder.
