A disturbance at a prison in Douglas left four Arizona Department of Corrections guards and 15 inmates injured.
The incident, which broke out on Sunday at 7:55 p.m. and took about an hour to get under control, was initially reported to the Cochise County Sheriff's Office as a riot, but was later reclassified because no inmates attempted to overtake the prison, said Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Carol Capas.
It was reported, however, that some inmates were on the roof of a building, throwing rocks at vehicles approaching the prison, Capas said.
The Cochise County Sheriff's Office set up a perimeter around the facility and the Douglas Police Department, Arizona Department of Public Safety, and U.S. Border Patrol responded to the scene as well.
The inmates, including one who was seriously injured, were taken to various medical facilities for treatment. Several had returned to the prison by Monday morning.
The corrections officers who were hurt were treated on site.
The perimeter detail set up by the Cochise County Sheriff's Office ended at 1:42 a.m. with no escapes or further incidents, Capas said.
The Arizona Department of Corrections is investigating the cause of the disturbance and the actions taken as a result.
