Tucsón tiene una nueva bebé elefante y necesita un nombre.
El Reid Park Zoo está recurriendo a todos nosotros, la comunidad, para ayudar a encontrar el nombre ideal de la nueva cría.
A partir de hoy, puedes votar por uno de los tres nombres propuestos a través de una encuesta del Arizona Daily Star y La Estrella de Tucsón.
La elefantita nació el 6 de abril pesando 295 libras. Su mamá se llama Semba.
El equipo de cuidado de elefantes reunió sus ideas y propuso las opciones de nombre, todas derivadas del swahili. Los nombres de los otros elefantes en Reid Park Zoo también tienen vínculos con su tierra natal en África.
"Queríamos continuar esa tradición mientras nombramos a esta cría, que servirá como embajadora de su especie y los desafíos que enfrentan los elefantes africanos en la naturaleza", dice el zoológico.
Las opciones de nombre son Mapenzi, que significa amado; Amani, que significa paz; y Zawadi, que significa regalo.
Vota por tu nombre favorito en la encuesta a continuación. La encuesta se cerrará a las 3 p.m. el miércoles 22 de abril.
"Idealmente, queremos un nombre... fácil de decir y recordar", dijo la directora de operaciones zoológicas Sue Tygielski. "Tampoco queremos que suene demasiado similar a los nombres de cualquiera de los otros elefantes en la manada para que cada uno sepa cuándo se llama su nombre".
La elefanta se une a la familia integrada por la mamá Semba, el padre Mabu, la hermana Nandi, el hermano Sundzu y a Lungile, que según el personal del zoológico es como una tía para Nandi y Sundzu.
Aunque el zoológico está actualmente cerrado en medio de la pandemia de coronavirus, la gente puede mantenerse al día con la manada de elefantes y todos los demás animales, en reidparkzoo.org o facebook.com/ReidParkZoo.
