Police ID armed man fatally shot by officers
Tucson police have identified a man who was shot by officers early Sunday morning.
Craig Yelton, 34, was shot by four TPD officers after exiting a residence with a handgun and confronting officers in the 100 block of North Understory Lane, east of North Houghton Road, police said.
Officers immediately began giving Yelton first aid and called paramedics from the Tucson Fire Department, but Yelton was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident began shortly after midnight when TPD officers responded to a call involving weapons. Before arriving, officers were informed that an adult male was upset by loud music at a neighborβs house and was waving a handgun, police said.
Officers initially made contact with the reporting party then attempted to make contact with Yelton using a public address system. That is when he exited the building with the handgun, TPD said.
None of the police officers were injured in the incident.
Detectives are conducting the criminal portion of the investigation, and sergeants with the departmentβs Office of Professional Standards are conducting a separate, parallel administrative investigation to examine the actions of the department personnel, police said.
In addition, representatives with the departmentβs Critical Incident Review Board are investigating.
