Tucson Desert Song Festival is putting America in the spotlight for its 14th annual festival, Jan. 16-April 25, 2026.
âAmerica Sings!â celebrates Americaâs 250th birthday with a roster of some of the countryâs most promising and accomplished vocalists, music that defines the American spirit, two world premieres by prominent American composers and the world premiere of a new work from Ballet Tucson.
âItâs an important jubilee year so weâre celebrating America,â said Juliana Osinchuk, the festivalâs co-artistic director alongside Julia Pernet.
Osinchuk said the theme encompasses âeverything from American compositions, (to) compositions about America, but mostly American artists.â
The theme is front and center in True Concord Voices & Orchestraâs festival opening event Jan. 16 âMusic of the Pioneers,â with baritone Will Liverman and in Arizona Friends of Chamber Musicâs world premiere Jan. 28 of Tamar-kaliâs new work centered on the Harlem Renaissance movement and the African-American jazz and classical pianist and composer Margaret Bonds.
Bass-baritone Will Liverman will perform âMusic of the Pioneersâ with True Concord Voices & Orchestra to open the 2026 Tucson Desert Song Festival in January. He also is doing a solo recital.
Arizona Early Music on Feb. 8 will look at the fragility of American democracy through the lens of time when bass-baritone DavÃŗne Tines and the âperiod instrument rock bandâ Ruckus present âWhat Is Your Hand in This?â
Program notes describe it as a âpowerful journey through four centuries of songs, hymns, balladsâ and newly commissioned works by Tines and Ruckus bassist Doug Balliett that pose the question: âHow can this fragile American experiment hold?â â
Grammy-winning soprano Karen Slack teams up with MirÃŗ Quartet to perform Tamar-kaliâs world premiere, one of three on the 2025 Song Festival lineup:
The MirÃŗ Quartet is performing a world premiere with soprano Karen Slack at the 2026 Tucson Desert Song Festival.
- Ballet Tucson will perform the world premiere of âDesert Dweller,â created by its artistic director Margaret Mullin and composer/guitarist Misael Barraza-Diaz, on Feb. 27-March 1.
- On April 7, Jennifer Johnson Cano, accompanied by her husband, Tucson native and pianist Christopher Cano, will perform the world premiere of a song cycle from opera composer Gregory Spears (âFellow Travelersâ) commissioned by the festival.
Mezzo-soprano Jennifer Johnson Cano earned critical acclaim for her role in Sante Fe Operaâs 2024 world premiere of Gregory Spearsâ opera âThe Righteous.â
The Spears commission, the festivalâs seventh since it premiered Richard Danielpourâs âSongs of Love and Lossâ in 2020, was the brainchild of Osinchuk after she and song festival board president Jeannette Segel and others from Tucson attended the August 2024 world premiere of Spearsâ opera âThe Righteousâ at the Santa Fe Opera.
âWe just thought the music was so beautiful and Jennifer Johnson Cano was the mezzo lead and they got along really well,â Segel said. âHe loves writing for Jennifer.â
Tucson Desert Song Festival commissioned composer Gregory Spears (âFellow Travelers,â âThe Righteousâ) to write a song cycle for soprano Jennifer Jason Cano. The world premiere will take place at the 14th annual festival next year.
Osinchuk said that during intermission, Christopher Cano introduced her to Spears and the pair talked about the festival and its commissioning program, which led to the question: Would he consider doing a commission for the festival? Spears said he would love to and suggested he would write something for Jennifer Johnson Cano.
âWe were in Santa Fe to hear âThe Righteous,â but for me personally, I think the number one draw for me there was Jennifer Johnson Cano,â Osinchuk said.
Johnson Canoâs appearance at the 2026 festival will be her third.
