As summer ends, nature lovers can look forward to exploring some of the world’s most stunning fall foliage destinations. In Nara, Japan, autumn rivals cherry blossom season. Kouyou paints the ancient capital’s park in red, gold, and yellow. England’s Forest of Dean is filled with golden oak and chestnut trees. You can walk or bike through the ancient woods, but be aware of the resident wild boars. In Pitlochry, Scotland, autumn colors light up the Tummel River. Visit in October for the Enchanted Forest, where trees are illuminated in sync with music and lights. In Lombardy, Italy, poplars turn yellow while the weather stays mild. Both countryside drives and Milan’s city parks offer beautiful autumn scenery. In Australia, the Dandenong Ranges light up in March. Near Melbourne, this national park and its gardens provide brilliant color beneath the southern sun. Canada’s Agawa Canyon is best seen by train. Departing from Sault Ste Marie, it winds through stunning forest landscapes that inspired iconic Canadian painters. Slovakia’s Tatra Mountains blaze with color in fall. Hike among glacier lakes, wildlife, and forests, or relax at Štrbské Pleso after leaf-filled mountain walks.
