Martha Wills, her husband, William, and family members are preparing for the upcoming conference, a collaboration of organizations, ministries and churches.

Sunshine Ministries, Inc. and the Racial Reconciliation Community Outreach Network will host the 31st Awakening Conference Thursday, June 8 through Saturday, June 10.

The theme of the conference this year is "Taking the Next Step." It has long focused on cultivating racial unity among Tucson churches and ministries.

The conference begins 7 p.m. Thursday June 8 at St. Mark's Presbyterian Church, 3809 E. Third St. It continues Friday at the same time and location with a presentation of music, dance and other performance arts, according to press materials.

Saturday workshops from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and noon to 2 p.m. will take place at the Sheraton Tucson Hotel and Suites, 5151 E. Grant Road. The weekend will conclude with a banquet 6 p.m. Saturday, June 10.

Everything but the banquet is free. Tickets for the banquet cost $65.
