Tucson Summer Music offers free music lessons to low income children.

Summer music lessons are within reach for Tucson’s low-income families, thanks to a volunteer-run program at St. Philip’s in the Hills Episcopal Church, 4440 N. Campbell Ave.

Tucson Summer Music, a local nonprofit, provides free private instrument lessons, group music theory classes, group vocal lessons and ensembles to children ages 5 to 13. All lessons take place weekly and end in a final recital where the students get to β€œshow off their new skills,” said Shelby King, the program’s director.

The program, in its seventh year, is completely volunteer-run so the number of children it can serve depends on the number of volunteers it draws each summer.

β€œWe’re looking for volunteers on all instruments and vocals,” King said. β€œIt is a really rewarding program for everyone involved. The families are so grateful for the opportunity, and the teachers, as volunteers, bring incredible passion and heart to the program.”

Students and those interested in volunteering can apply and get more information online at tucsonsummermusic.com. Students must apply by June 4.

Lessons begin June 11 and run through the end of July.
