Picture this: Youâre working out â squatting, sprinting, lunging â doing things you usually reserve for the gym.
But youâre not at the gym. Youâre in a brewery.
Next thing you know, youâre sipping (or chugging â we wonât judge) a nice cold pint with fellow exercise and beer enthusiasts.
Youâre not dreaming. Youâre at Brewery Bootcamp, a full-body workout at Dragoon Brewing Co., led by Brice Helms, personal trainer and owner of Framework Fitness Training LLC.
Workouts are mainly body weight focused, but Helms uses some of Dragoonâs rubberized five-gallon kegs, filled to different weights with water, for strength exercises such as dead lifts, bent-over rows and farmerâs walks.
âI change the format every class, so itâs never the same routine and it ends up being a great cardiovascular and strength training workout,â Helms said.
âWe start about an hour before the taproom opens with a brief warmup, the workout itself and finish with a stretch-focused cool-down. Then all participants get to have a glass of any of Dragoonâs beers. Itâs a good post-workout reward.â
The novelty of working out at a brewery, and the low price, are a draw for participants.
âI went because I thought it was cool that we got to work out in a brewery and you get a beer when youâre done,â said Alexis Barber, 27.
âItâs a good price, too. Ten dollars to work out and your first beer. Also, it didnât hurt that the instructor was cute.â
The programâs goal is to introduce better beer to exercise enthusiasts and give the craft beer lover a great excuse to work out and keep fit, Helms said.
âDrinking beer and exercise donât sound like a likely combination, but done in the right context, they can work very well together,â he added.
