A man who police say fired at an officer during a traffic stop early Monday was arrested hours later after he was spotted on a bus bench, officials say.
Paul Elliott Irvin, 48, prompted an hours-long search by multiple law enforcement agencies across the city after police say he fired on an officer who was chasing him when Irvin ran from a pickup truck pulled over on North Tucson Boulevard near East Fort Lowell Road about 3 a.m. Sunday, Tucson police said in a news release.
On Monday evening Irvin was seen on a bus bench near South Alvernon Way and East 29th Street. He ran away, but was apprehended a short time later, police said.
In the chase from the bus bench, Irvin was struck by a pursuing police vehicle. He’s been hospitalized for injuries that are not life-threatening, police say.
Irvin is expected to be booked into the Pima County jail after his release from the hospital, police said.
Police say Irvin was carrying a gun when he was arrested.
Irvin is a convicted felon, having been sentenced to the Arizona Department of Corrections for misconduct involving a weapon and criminal damage. A warrant was issued for Irvin in January in a case that involved credit card theft, identity theft and drug charges, court records show.
