Tom Mix, hero of silent film westerns, died Oct. 12, 1940, in a car crash near Florence, Arizona.
His car overturned and he was pinned, but his death was caused by a heavy suitcase that hit his head and broke his neck during the accident.
Mix had left Tucson that day for Phoenix and was serving as an advance agent for a circus.
