The Bailey home was photographed in 1960. It had been built as an experimental house — one of five homes in Tucson built of perlite block. The home was designed for an active family, including three children.

When the James Baileys designed their charming home they made the family room the focal point for the children's wing. This comfortable room has proved to be the most popular place in their home.

Mrs. Bailey stands on the steps leading from the patio to the tennis court. Perched on the fence is her mother-in-law, Mrs. A. E. Bailey, who is visiting from Florida.

The clouds were putting on a spectacular show the day this picture was taken. The bricked terrace is overlooked by the master bedroom, the living and dining rooms and the family room.

The terrace covering consists of strips of sahuaro. "We made it ourselves, from going out and finding dead sahuaros, knocking them over and stripping the skeleton to risking our necks on the roof."
