Asthma research unit to be led by Martinez
Dr.Β Fernando D. Martinez, a UA regents professor and SwiftβMcNear endowed chair of pediatrics, was named inaugural director of the new Asthma and Airway Disease Research Center at the University of Arizona.
In taking on the role, Martinez steps down as director of the UA Bio5 Institute, a position he held since 2009.
He is a member of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute Advisory Council and the National Scientific Council on the Developing Child. He has been on the Pulmonary and Allergy Drug Advisory Committee of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and the National Asthma Education and Prevention Programβs Expert Panel.
Martinez received his medical degrees from the University of Chile in Santiago and the University of Rome, specializing in pediatric pulmonology. He has been at the UA since 1987.
