AZ health chief Humble starts UA job April 13

The state’s longtime director of the Department of Health Services will soon join the University of Arizona.

Will Humble has been appointed division director for health policy and evaluation at the Center for Population Science and Discovery at Arizona Health Sciences Center.

Humble is a Tucson native who served as director of ADHS since 2009, an agency with about 2,000 employees and a budget of approximately $2 billion.

The Center for Population Science and Discovery aims to leverage the Arizona Health Sciences Center in health-care policy and other matters.

Humble begins his new job on April 13.

He has served as an adjunct faculty member for the UA Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health for more than 10 years. He is active in a range of community organizations, serving as chair of the Arizona Developmental Disabilities Planning Council from 2011-2015 and as a board member for Scottsdale Training & Rehabilitation Services.

Humble received his master’s in public health from the University of California at Berkeley in 1991; his bachelor’s in microbiology from Arizona State University in 1985; and his bachelor’s in business administration from Northern Arizona University in 1982. In addition, he will receive an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from the UA at commencement ceremonies May 16 for his “dedication to the profession of public health and to its pursuit in Arizona.”
