Watercourses in the Tucson area usually revert quickly to dry ribbons of sand soon after rains stop — but this month is different.

Many rivers and creeks around the valley have continued flowing in the absence of recent rains — fed by abundant snowmelt from high mountain ranges to the north and east of the city.

It’s a curious but welcome sight for many Tucsonans — this fluid phenomenon of rivers and creeks persisting as, well, actual rivers and creeks rather than withering into sandboxes.

Among watercourses that continued carrying water this past week were Agua Caliente Wash, Tanque Verde Creek and the Rillito River.

It appears that continued stream flow will depend on continued snowmelt in the immediate future. Most weather forecasts indicate no precipitation in the coming week.
