The Arizona Department of Transportation is building a pedestrian underpass next to the Mariposa Port of Entry in Nogales.

The 10-foot-by-10-foot concrete box culvert will extend 356 feet and include a ventilation system and lighting, ADOT said in a news release. The agency also plans to build new sidewalks, add traffic signals, and make storm drain improvements.

The expected cost of the project is $3.3 million. The underpass will allow pedestrians to safely walk to and from the port of entry along Arizona 189, ADOT said. As it stands, pedestrians and tractor-trailer traffic are not separated in the state’s right-of-way.

“At less than four miles long, SR 189 in Nogales is one of the shortest routes on the state’s highway system, but it is a critical component of Arizona’s Key Commerce Corridors that facilitates international trade and commerce due to its close proximity to the U.S.-Mexico border,” the agency said.

ADOT expects to finish the project in December.
