More than 20 years ago when she was living in Tucson, Caryl Cadigan wrote a song of support for the Sanctuary Movement.
That movement illegally brought Central Americans into the United States. Supporters said the refugees faced persecution and death squads in their home nations, while critics said many were just seeking jobs.
The movement had its roots at Southside Presbyterian Church in Tucson, which is where Cadigan came last week to perform her song again. The song, called Sanctuary, continues to have meaning today with refugees who are in crisis worldwide, she said.
Cadigan, who now lives in Washington state, performed the song with the Southside choir and with her sister, musician and music instructor Susan Vance Koch, who came to Tucson from Ohio for the occasion.
Southside Presbyterian Church continues to have a role advocating social justice for undocumented immmigrants.
