An 18-year-old Mexican national was arrested and 5,560 rounds of ammunition was seized Tuesday at the Nogales port of entry, officials said.
Officers performing routine outbound inspections referred the man driving a GMC SUV for a secondary inspection before heading into Mexico, according to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection news release.
During the search, officers found the assorted ammunition hidden throughout the vehicle, authorities said.
The man was taken into custody and the vehicle and ammunition were turned over to federal investigators.
"This interception is a direct result of the hard work and continued vigilance of our CBP officers," said Nogales Port Director Guadalupe Ramirez.
"Keeping ammunition out of the hands of drug traffickers disrupts their operations and reduces violence along the border," Ramirez said.
