An 18-year-old man is facing terrorism charges in connection with threats made against a Sunnyside Unified School District school, police said Wednesday.
Tucson police arrested Arturo Gil on suspicion of terrorism, a class 2 felony, and hoax, a class 4 felony. He was booked into the Pima County jail.
Police said a threat was posted on several Facebook pages on Sunday night saying two bombs and six gunmen would be at the STAR Academic Center Monday morning if $1,000 was not paid. The post advised that the threats were "not a joke."
Police searched the school Sunday night and did not find any explosives. The school was closed Monday as a precautionary measure, and classes resumed Tuesday.
Detectives worked to identify five people linked to the threat and served a search warrant at a residence near South 12th Avenue and West Nebraska Street on Monday, said Sgt. Kimberly Bay, a Tucson police spokeswoman.
Gil was one of those detainees and was identified as a suspect and arrested, Bay said Wednesday.
