A donated replacement flag for one that was stolen from a north-side business was raised on Friday morning.
The American flag went up at J.R. McDade Flooring Co., 3650 N. Oracle Road, just north of West Prince Road, after the community came together to make it possible, said Officer Charles Foley of the Tucson Police Department.
Foley and fellow officer Bradley Clark donated the original 8-by-12 flag to the business through a project Flags for the Flagless that they founded last year to put flags on barren flagpoles in the downtown area.
Their project, which they carry on when off duty, has now spread throughout the city.
Once the flag was stolen from the flooring company, donors came forward to support its replacement.
The $300 flag was replaced by the Tucson Police Department’s SWAT team.
KGUN Channel 9 donated the rope used to raise and lower the flag on the pole because the rope was cut by the thief.
Tucson Electric Power Co. donated the use of a bucket truck to replace the rope on the 70-foot flagpole to raise the flag.
And an electrician gave his time to install a spotlight on the roof of the flooring business to illuminate the flag at night.
“The community pulled together to replace the flag. It makes me feel good about the city that we live in,” said Foley, adding that others have donated flags, and more than $300 has poured in for the project since the theft.
