A house fire contained to a bedroom displaced a family of four Thursday on the city's south side.

The family's two dogs were in the home near South 17th Avenue and West Utah Street, said Capt. Andrew Skaggs, a Tucson Fire Department spokesman. He said the dogs died.

Multiple calls to 911 reported the fire and firefighters arrived on scene shortly after 4 p.m., and brought the blaze under control by 4:18 p.m., Skaggs said.

The family had left their home to do an errand, and when they returned they encountered firefighters battling the blaze, Skaggs said. The heat was so intense it appeared the home's windows were melting, he said.

The fire was contained to the bedroom because the door was shut, Skaggs said.

The Southern Arizona Chapter of the American Red Cross was assisting the family.

The cause of the fire was under investigation. A damage estimate was not yet known.
