Police have arrested a man in connection with the stabbing death of his stepfather during a family fight.
Officers were called around 9 a.m. Friday to a home in the 6000 block of East Hampton Street, near East Grant Road and North Wilmot Road, about a fight involving a knife, according to a news release from the Tucson Police Department.
When officers arrived they detained an adult male who left the residence. Once inside the home officers found another man who had been stabbed in the chest with a large hunting knife. The man was taken by Tucson Fire ambulance to Banner-University Medical Center Tucson, where he was pronounced dead.
He was later identified as Alan Nielsen, 72.
Detectives were able to determine that Nielsen and his stepson, James L. Mason Jr., 43, were involved in a verbal altercation. During the argument, Mason stabbed his stepfather in the chest, said Sgt. Pete Dugan, a police spokesman.
The victim's spouse and Mason's nephew were inside the home at the time of the stabbing, Dugan said. No one else was injured.
Mason was booked in the Pima County jail and is facing one count of domestic violence-first-degree murder.
