A 29-year-old motorcyclist was killed early Saturday morning near a construction zone, but investigators do not know how the wreck occurred.

At about 3 a.m. a deputy patrolling in the 6400 block of East Valencia Road near South Wilmot Road, found Jason E. Wiczynski lying in the street near a motorcycle, Deputy Tom Peine, a spokesman for the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, said in a news release.

“Another motorcyclist was at the scene as well, but was not involved and had not witnessed the incident,” Peine said.

Wiczynski was taken by ambulance to the University of Arizona Medical Center, where he died.

“Evidence found at the scene suggested that Mr. Wiczynski was traveling westbound on Valencia Road and was not wearing a helmet at the time of the incident,” Peine said. “The motorcyclist who stood by reported he saw several other cars in the area when he approached the scene. Those vehicles had left at the time the deputy arrived.”

Sheriff’s investigators are trying to figure out how Wiczynski was injured. Anyone who saw what happened or any occupant of the other vehicles that were at the scene should call 911 or 88-CRIME to help further the investigation, Peine said.
