The 21-foot saguaro cactus that was to be shipped to online retail giant Amazon is staying put in the Sonoran Desert.Β
Sun Corridor Inc. planned to send the large plant to Seattle in a bid to bring Amazon's planned second headquarters to Tucson.
Amazon's official news Twitter account tweeted on Thursday its regrets that it cannot accept gifts, "even really cool ones."
Instead, Amazon donated the saguaro to the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum.Β
Sun Corridor said in a news release on Tuesday that it will work with museum staff to find a suitable location.Β
"Amazon also has indicated to us that the company looks forward to receiving Tucson's RFP to host Amazon HQ2," the Sun Corridor news release said, while noting national media outlets that have highlighted Tucson's effort including the New York Times, Seattle Times, and U.S. News & World Report/Associated Press.
Amazon announced earlier this month that it is planning to build a second corporate headquarters location and says it is considering metropolitan areas with more than 1 million in population.
The company says it will hire as many as 50,000 new full-time employees over the next 10 to 15 years and invest more than $5 billion in capital in its second headquarters. The new location will include a site that is urban or suburban and require 8 million square feet of space.
