A 43-year-old man was sentenced to nearly three years in federal prison Tuesday for making 20 false bomb threats to businesses and government offices in Tucson and the Phoenix area.
Octavio Acosta De La Torre, of Nogales, Sonora, was sentenced to 33 months in prison by Senior U.S. District Judge David C. Bury, according to a news release.
De La Torre had previously pleaded guilty to false threats to persons and property using or affecting interstate commerce.
Between March 21 and April 1, 2016, De La Torre made the false threats to businesses and offices, including schools and military recruiting stations, which resulted in numerous closures and evacuations, authorities said.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Tucson Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Beverly K. Anderson and Cory Picton prosecuted the case.
