Leaves are showing a first flash of fall color high in the Catalina Mountains north of Tucson, where autumn hues of red and gold usually reach their peak in mid- or late October.

Mountain visitors will find some previews of the more extensive October color show at places such as Bear Wallow, near mile marker 22 on the Catalina Highway northeast of Tucson, and near the summit of Mount Lemmon. To reach the summit area, take the Catalina Highway past mile marker 24 to the turnoff for Mount Lemmon Ski Valley. Drive to Ski Valley and then continue uphill on a narrow road to the top of the mountain.

The reddish leaves of maple trees and golden leaves of aspens are the standouts, with other trees and shrubs adding subtle hues.

Don’t expect expansive displays this early in the season, but rather some pleasing pockets of color. And be aware that even peak season in the Catalinas won’t rival the colorful autumn landscapes you might see in Colorado or Vermont.

Temperatures in the range have been mild so far, but you could encounter some chilly weather as we move further into fall. It’s a good idea to bring a sweater or fleece jacket just in case.

And don’t forget the camera.
