Tucson Unified School district announced it will continue school closures Wednesday, marking the fifth day of the teacher strike that has brought most Arizona schools to a stand-still.

Meanwhile, other school districts in the area say they are opening later this week.

At TUSD, free breakfast and lunch will be available at all schools except Warren Elementary, where staff is being furloughed, except for staff on a 12-month calendar.

Students will not be allowed at other TUSD schools, except with a parent for free breakfast and lunch, but teachers and staff at all other schools will be allowed to work.

The TUSD Governing Board is scheduled to meet Tuesday night to weigh issues related to the walkout, including what conditions may require district-wide closures and furloughs, whether schools will have to extend their calendar years because of the walkouts, and what conditions would require the district to change high school graduation ceremony dates.

Amphitheater Unified School District announced it plans to reopen schools Thursday, May 3.

Amphi superintendent Todd Jaeger said in a statement that after talking with his leadership team, "it was clear that resolution of the statewide teacher walkout is dependent on the budget vote in the legislature."

He noted that the state budget is slated to be approved Wednesday, and the Legislature is racing toward adjournment, likely Thursday.

"Therefore, we are announcing that all schools will reopen on Thursday, May 3." he wrote.

Marana school will remain closed tomorrow, Wednesday, May 2.

Marana said breakfast and lunch meals will be provided on Wednesday, May 2 at select schools. Go to www.maranausd.org to get more information.

Jaeger noted that schools will need to make up the instructional time that has been missed during the closure.

"Please be assured that we are exploring all potential options to minimize the impact on the end of the year," he wrote, adding that the district will need to extend its existing school days by a number of minutes each day, as well as cancel all scheduled early release days.

Similarly, Marana says it will reopen on Thursday, May 3.

Tanque Verde school district will resume classes on Wednesday, May 2, the superintendent told parents Tuesday afternoon. The notice said Wednesday will be treated as an early release day and that parents will get additional information from principals at individual schools.
