On July 15, 1997, Jaime Garcia, left, and Fred Cooper, Tucson Street Department employees, cleaned up a white supremacist "hangout" near Santa Rita High School. The hangout was filled with Nazi and racist slogans. 

The number of hate groups in Southern Arizona rose by one to five in 2014, according to the latest numbers from the Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks such groups.

The group newly listed from Tucson is the Traditionalist Youth Network at Arizona, listed as a white nationalist groups. 

Two other groups are in Tucson, while the others are in Sierra Vista and Sells.

In contrast the total number of groups listed in Arizona has dropped from 20 in 2013 to 16 last year. Only four states west of the Mississippi River — California (57), Texas (36), Arkansas (20) and Missouri (19) — have more hate groups than Arizona.

The "list was compiled using hate group publications and websites, citizen and law enforcement reports, field sources and news reports," according the the Southern Poverty Law Center's website.

California has the most hate groups, followed by Florida (50), New York (44) and New Jersey (40).
