Since May 2015 in partnership with WishListHero.org, the Star has featured the donation wish lists of 113 nonprofit organizations in Southern Arizona.

These are the items that were most requested by the featured nonprofits (in order of frequency of request):

  • Household items (paper towels, tissues, toilet paper, bed sheets, blankets, towels).
  • Donations, gift cards for grocery and gas.
  • Office supplies (copy paper, envelopes, stamps, pens/pencils, staples).
  • School supplies (pens/pencils, markers, crayons, paint, notebooks, binders).
  • Personal-care items (shampoo, conditioner, soap, lotion, sunscreen, hairbrushes/combs, toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, ChapStick, diapers, wipes).
  • Furniture (white boards, shelving/storage, tables and chairs).

Many featured nonprofits have reported positive responses to their needs:

Joyce Sanford, president of the Southern Arizona Golden Retriever Rescue, said their main need was a scanner. She said a few days after their list was published a box arrived containing a scanner.

“It even came with ink, thanks to a very thoughtful donor,” Sanford wrote. “We could not have gotten this type of coverage in other ways and cannot thank you enough.”

Ally Baehr, director of community engagement for Make Way for Books, said the organization received donations of books and a flat-screen computer monitor after its list was publicized.

Angy Shearer, director of development and community relations for La Frontera, said the group received a “generous donation of arts and crafts for our children’s programs.”
