Martin Lopez

A 27-year-old corrections officer is under arrest, suspected of smuggling drugs into the Pima County jail.

Corrections Officer Martin Lopez had been on the job for less than a year when the Pima County Sheriff's Department received a tip about possible misconduct, a sheriff's news release said.

His arrest Wednesday followed a week-long investigation that involved detectives, air and K-9 units and specialized patrol units.

Lopez is charged with transportation of narcotics and promoting prison contraband.

In an email, sheriff's department spokesman Deputy James Allerton pushed back against what he said were rumors "about others being implicated" in the case.

"No high ranking member of the Pima County Sheriff’s Department was arrested or implicated," Allerton said.

Investigation is continuing. Anyone with information is asked to call 911 or 88-CRIME
