A deputy fatally shot a woman who was brandishing a large wooden board in southwest of Tucson, Pima County Sheriff's officials say.

Amanda Alvarez, 38, struck a resident with a two-by-four about 4 p.m. Saturday in the 4700 block of West Camino Tierra, near West Los Reales Road and South Camino de Oeste.

Deputies found Alvarez in a trailer and she was later shot by a deputy, the department said in a news release.Alvarez died a a Tucson hospital.

The deputy involved was identified as Samuel Herrera, who has been with the department about 18 months. He was treated at the scene for β€œchemical exposure,” the news release said.

Sheriff's officials have not released more details about the shooting, including what prompted the deadly encounter.

The incident is under investigation.
