Law enforcers will be on the alert for drunk drivers on a holiday weekend well known for boozing.

May 5 or Cinco de Mayo, also referred to as Drinko de Mayo or Cinco de Drinko, typically is celebrated with tequila and is viewed by many Americans as a Mexican holiday even though it's largely unnoticed south of the border.

In Southern Arizona, it's a time for DUI "saturation patrols" and warnings about the high financial cost of a drunk-driving conviction, which can total $10,000 or more for a first-time offender in Tucson.

Tucson Police Department, the Pima County Sheriff's Department, University of Arizona Police Department and Arizona state troopers have all announced stepped-up patrols and are urging partygoers to plan in advance for a ride home.
