Volunteers on Saturday will attempt to sew 2,000 duffel bags to be given to children in foster care.

On Saturday, volunteers will take part in a “sew-a-thon” at the Tucson Woman’s Club to sew duffel bags for children in care of the Arizona Department of Child Safety.

About 130 volunteers are expected to take part in sewing the duffel bags for Aviva Children’s Services’ “Bags for Kids” program.

The sewing event, which is now in its 19th year, will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Aviva Children’s Services is a Tucson-based nonprofit agency that provides support services and resources to children in foster care.

Volunteers make colorful fabric duffel bags for these children to use instead of trash bags to carry their belongings when they are removed from their homes.

Last year, Aviva’s program distributed 5,000 duffel bags, about half of them produced by volunteers during the annual “sew-a-thon” event.

The goal at this year’s event is to sew about 2,000 bags.

This year’s sewing event is sponsored in part by Cathey’s Sewing & Vacuum, Mama’s Hawaiian Bar-B-cue, and the Tucson Woman’s Club.
