The man who died Friday night in a wreck on Interstate 19 was an off-duty Customs and Border Protection officer.

Walterio Nunez, Jr. was a supervisory CBP officer assigned to the Port of Nogales, according to CBP's Tucson Field Office. He worked with CBP for 26 years, 20 of which were in Nogales.

Nunez died from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle wreck south of Tucson Friday night, authorities said.

The two-vehicle collision occurred around 8:39 p.m. on southbound I-19 at Papago Road, about seven miles past Valencia RoadDispatchers reported one of the vehicles was overturned during the incident.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety responded to the scene where one person was pronounced dead. A second person is being transported to the Banner-University Medical Center, the department said Saturday.

The collision blocked the I-19 roadway for several hours until authorities were able to reopen right travel lane.

No further information has been released.
