Rural Metro Fire Department crews responded to multiple emergency calls to rescue hikers as temperatures reached more than 100 degrees Thursday afternoon.

A woman was rescued one mile into the Douglas Springs Trailhead at Saguaro National Park for heat-related issues, a news release said. She was treated before being brought out with help from multiple agencies, including the U.S. National Park Service.

Three more hikers were taken to a hospital after being overwhelmed from intense heat in the Sabino Canyon Seven Falls trail, said John Walka, a fire department spokesman. Personnel from the Pinal County Sheriff's Office and Southern Arizona Rescue Association hiked about one mile to save the hikers.

The department urges hikers to avoid going out in triple-digit temperatures. "We notice that most hikers do not bring enough water and food for normal hiking trips which is important," the release said.
