Survivors, community members and Pima County officials will gather at the downtown memorial at 10 a.m. Thursday to mark the 15th anniversary of the Jan. 8, 2011, mass shooting in Tucson.

The annual remembrance at the Jan. 8 Embrace Memorial, next to the historic Pima County Courthouse at 115 N. Church Ave., will include a prayer and the reading of the names of the six people who died and the 13 who were wounded in the attack on a β€œCongress on Your Corner” event hosted by then-U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in northwest Tucson.

Speakers at the ceremony will include County Supervisor Rex Scott, Tucson Mayor Regina Romero and Giffords’ former district director, Ron Barber, who was among those shot that day.

A bell will be rung for each of the victims at 10:10 a.m., the moment the gunman opened fire.

Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords lays flowers and touches the symbol that represents the U.S. Congress following an informal gathering at the January 8th Memorial near the Pima County Historic Courthouse on the 13th anniversary of the shooting in 2024.

Christina-Taylor Green, 9; Dorothy Morris, 76; U.S. District Judge John M. Roll, 63; Phyllis Schneck, 79; Dorwan Stoddard, 76; and Gabe Zimmerman, 30, were killed in the shooting.

Those wounded included Bill Badger, Ken Dorushka, James Eric Fuller, Randy Gardner, Suzi Hileman, George Morris, Mary Reed, Pam Simon, Mavanell Stoddard, Jim Tucker and Kenneth Veeder.

Giffords survived a gunshot wound to the head, but had to resign from the House of Representatives. She now works as a national gun-safety advocate.

Barber was elected to succeed Giffords in Congress and later served as president of the nonprofit foundation that spearheaded the development of the Jan. 8 memorial downtown.

The almost-1-acre installation was completed in late 2020 and dedicated on the 10th anniversary of the shooting in 2021.
