A Tucson firefighter administers oxygen to a dog rescued from a burning house on Tucson's southwest side on Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2015. Firefighters saved two dogs from the fire. Four dogs perished in the blaze.

Tucson firefighters used pet CPR kits to save two dogs found inside a burning home Wednesday morning on the city's south side.

A 12-year-old boy in the house was taken to the hospital to be checked out for smoke inhalation after escaping the burning house through a bedroom window, according to Capt. Barrett Baker of the Tucson Fire Department.

However, four dogs perished in the blaze, Baker said.

Firefighters responded to the house fire at about 7:30 a.m. in the 7200 block of South Teri Place, near East Valencia Road and Interstate 19. Multiple callers reported heavy smoke coming from the house, Baker said.

Firefighters confirmed everyone was out of the house and they went into the house with a line to douse a fire coming from the kitchen.

Several dogs were found inside the home, with several already dead, Baker said.

Two dogs were carried to firefighters outside, who began giving them oxygen using the department's pet CPR kits. Both dogs survived after being given oxygen. Four dogs did not survive the blaze, he said.

The fire was brought under control in about 22 minutes by nine units. There were no injuries to firefighters.

Baker said a young boy in the home said he heard the dogs barking and when he came out of his bedroom noticed heavy smoke and flames. He got out through a bedroom window. He was taken as a precautionary measure to a hospital to be checked out, Baker said.

The American Red Cross and Pima Animal Care Center are assisting the family. The fire's cause is under investigation, but it was determined to have started in the kitchen. A damage amount was not immediately available.
