The South Tucson City Council has opted to sell the Sam Lena Library, which is part of the municipal complex.

No money changed hands, as Pima County agreed to buy the library for $450,000 in a complex financial arrangement intended to help South Tucson pay down outstanding debt.

The county had been leasing space from South Tucson for about $98,000 a year, but the lease expired in May.

Under the terms of the sale plan, the county will write down $450,000 in debt owed by South Tucson. Most of the debt is associated with unpaid bills tied to the county jail and the Pima Animal Control Center.

The county also agreed to refinance the remaining South Tucson debt over the next two decades.

The library will need tens of thousands of dollars in repairs to the roof as well as some repairs to the exterior of the building.
