A 29-year-old woman was killed in a crash Friday morning after investigators say it appears she swerved into oncoming traffic after a tire failed on the SUV she was driving, Tucson police say.

About 7 a.m., Joellen Maria Gonzalez was driving a 1998 GMC SUV south in the 6800 block of South Alvernon Way, south of East Valencia Road, when she swerved into northbound traffic, Tucson police said Saturday in a news release.

The SUV smashed into a northbound 2022 Polestar sedan. Its 52-year-old driver was hospitalized with injuries deemed not life threatening, police said.

Gonzalez died at the crash scene.

Evidence indicates Gonzalez was traveling well above the posted 45 mph speed limit at the time of the crash, the release said.

The investigation continues.
