An air quality advisory is in effect this weekend, with elevated levels of particulate matter blowing throughout eastern Pima County, officials said.

The particulates are expected to remain in the area for a day or more, as winds have started to taper off, said Beth Gorman, a Pima County Department of Environmental Quality.

On top of the blowing matter, the cold temperatures expected for tonight will increase fireplace usage, that will generate smoke and add to the particulates in the air, Gorman said.

People with respiratory issues might want to reduce their activity to decrease the amount of particulates they breathe, and avoid symptoms like eye, nose, throat and lung irritation, coughing, sneezing, runny nose and shortness of breath. People most at risk may feel better if they avoid exercise outdoors and stay inside as much as possible. Shutting doors and windows can help reduce exposure, Gorman said.

Particulate matter is composed of tiny specks of soot, dust and aerosols. With high wind speeds, particulate matter is increased and combined with sources such as cars and fires.

Up-to-the-hour air pollution levels are available in the air monitoring section of the department's website. People can sign up to receive Air Quality Advisories via email at this site.
